This painting by Frithjof Schuon is reproduced at the top of page 193 of Images of Primordial and Mystic Beauty (Abodes, 1992). We know that this sun is rising because Plains Indian tipis are oriented with their doors toward the east, so that the people may greet the rising of the sun. Besides the patches of snow (which mirror the clouds above) and the roseate coloring everywhere, note the smoke rising from each tipi to the vault of heaven, just as the rising sun’s rays disperse throughout the sky. The original painting is from 1966 and is 8 by 6 inches, one of Schuon’s smaller paintings.
